Teaching Overview

The courses offered at the chair all revolve around the research focus of communication networks and distributed systems. As can be seen in the picture above, not only classical lectures but also research seminars and assisted practical activities are provided. Students are also able to work on their bachelor as well as master thesis in close cooperation with one of the chairs research assistants. All provided courses are shortly described below.

 

Bachelor Courses
Transmission TheoryThis lecture aims to provide basic knowledge about transmission systems and their properties as well as the structure of and components used in telecommunications and computer networks.
Hardware LaboratoriesThis practical course aims to impart knowledge about signal transmission and modern network technology (SDN, Openflow, ...) to students.
Computer and Communication NetworksThis lecture's goal is to pass information about the features of communication networks, advanced transmission theory in distributed systems, communication protocols as well as basic performance evaluation of distributed systems.
Seminaries in Communication Systems

The chair offers several seminaries that cover different aspects of the research and teaching focus. The titles of the seminaries held regularly are

Bachelor ThesisAll students are able to work on their Bachelor Thesis in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Phuoc Tran-Gia as head of the chair as well as an assigned research assistant that supports the student during the research and writing process of the thesis. It is possible to work on research topics provided by the chair, while proposal or development of personalized topics together with the assigned assistant is also possible.
Master Courses
Performance Evaluation of Distributed SystemsThis advanced lecture aims to provide knowledge about the methodology for performance evaluation of technical systems as well as an introduction to queuing theory. The obtained knowledge is then utilized to conduct performance evaluations of computer systems, computer networks and production systems.
Discrete Event SimulationThe goal of this lecture is to provide basic knowledge about simulation processes. While generation of random numbers, design of experiment and advanced statistics are discussed, the student will use all this information to develop a simple simulation framework.
Future Internet ApplicationsThis lecture is documented as Chosen Topics of Computer Communications. This lecture aims to teach basic understanding of digital media encoding, video and audio streaming via the internet as well as transmission and signaling protocols and their respective applications.
Professional Project ManagementThis course is documented as Special Courses from Industry. The course teaches students how to work in large project groups as well as the organization procedures of small projects. The course contents among others are risk assessment, quality assurance and stakeholder analysis. During the course, students will organize a project and work together in teams to develop a small business.
Seminaries in Communication SystemsThe seminaries listed in the bachelor courses section apply to both bachelor and master students.
Advanced LaboratoriesAll master students are able to work on their practical works at the chair. The work is performed in close cooperation with one of the research assistants. Topics can either be obtained from the chair or be proposed by the student.
Master ThesisAll students are able to work on their Master Thesis in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Phuoc Tran-Gia as head of the chair as well as an assigned research assistant that supports the student during the research and writing process of the thesis. It is possible to work on research topics provided by the chair, while proposal or development of personalized topics together with the assigned assistant is also possible.
